Do you trust artificial intelligence? The question is simple. But the answer is equally difficult.
Artificial intelligence is now influencing decisions and transforming processes in every field. This rapid integration creates as much anxiety as it does excitement. As technology advances, humanity’s search for meaning deepens: ‘Why should I trust this system?’
‘Trust’ is an extremely ambitious and powerful concept. The question of whom, what, and how we trust is complex. When it comes to algorithms, the situation becomes even more problematic.
The answer to this question lies not only in code quality or model accuracy. The real answer lies in the cultural, administrative, and ethical structures built around the technology.
Uncertainty Erodes Trust!
57% of employees use AI tools at work. They hide these tools from their managers. 48% also upload sensitive company information to open platforms. Why? Because they don’t know how it works, its limitations, and its risks. Uncertainty breeds suspicion.
Meanwhile, the Stanford AI Index 2025 Report reveals that AI-related errors have increased by 56% in the past year. As errors increase, the sense of responsibility becomes blurred. Who was at fault? The data, the model, the person who coded it, or the manager who approved it?
This picture leads us to seek a new paradigm. It is necessary to build trust not only through engineering. We must also focus on transparency, accountability, and participation.
Fundamental Principles of Trust
Although trust may be perceived as an abstract emotion, it is actually directly related to institutional capacity. Three principles are fundamentally decisive:
- Transparency: Transparency is the first line of defense against the unknown. How it works should be shared openly. The data it is fed with should be disclosed. The assumptions it makes decisions with should also be shared openly.
- Accountability: Who will be responsible for the consequences of the decisions made by the system?
- Participation: Users should be able to contribute to the processes that shape the system. The adoption of the system depends on its evolution together with its users.
These principles are prerequisites for building trust. Nonetheless, there is also a need for a framework to systematically manage them.
Trust Model: “Trust Octagon”
The Trust Octagon model, proposed by academic J. Cadavid and colleagues specifically for the healthcare sector, addresses trust in artificial intelligence in eight fundamental dimensions. In this model, trust is defined within a measurable and manageable system:
- Transparency: Does the system clearly show how it works?
- Fairness: Does it produce unbiased results for different groups?
- Privacy: Is personal data protected and processed ethically?
- Reliability: Is the system stable and predictable?
- Accountability: Can the logic of decisions be explained?
- Security: Is it resilient against cyber threats?
- Legal Compliance: Does the system operate in compliance with legal regulations?
- Interpretability: Can the user understand and evaluate the system output?
To integrate trust in artificial intelligence into corporate culture, investment in three fundamental areas is essential:
- Education: All employees should be trained in ethics, law, and algorithmic literacy.
- Governance: Ethical codes should not stay only at the level of principles. They should be integrated into all decision processes.
- Leadership: Building trust is directly related to the transparency and responsibility shown by managers. The message given by the leader is always stronger than the data provided by the system.
Conclusion: Without Trust, Technology Remains Inadequate!
Artificial intelligence is undoubtedly one of the greatest technological leaps of our age. Yet, the social equivalent of this leap depends not only on the algorithm’s performance. It also relies on the values of the institutions that design, implement, and manage it. Thus, it is not enough for the system to work correctly. It also needs to be transparent, auditable, and accountable.
Models like Trust Octagon make it possible to analyze this trust across eight dimensions and integrate it into governance processes. Yet, the real issue is not the existence of this framework, but how much the institution embraces it. Trust is built through behaviors, not excel spreadsheets. Transparency at the first crisis moment shows the quality of the institution. Responsibility taken after the first mistake also reflects this quality. The dialogue established after the first success further demonstrates the strength of the institution, not the system.
Today, every institution investing in technology needs to build a trust strategy at the same time. This strategy requires the participation of all stakeholders. Participants range from HR to communications. They also include the legal department and senior management. It involves more than just technical teams. Because algorithms can make decisions, but only humans can build trust.
Moreover, it should not be forgotten that trust is not only an institutional performance criterion, but also a sustainability criterion. A system that is not transparent and fair cannot maintain its legitimacy in the long term. It does not account for itself. This is true neither in the public, nor in the market, nor in society.
So, today’s question is not ‘who has the best AI model?’ but ‘Who has the most reliable decision architecture?’
