Is convenience undermining our competence?
The conveniences that technology, particularly artificial intelligence, brings into our lives are undeniable. Nevertheless, these advancements come with an unexpected danger: the erosion of our skills.
This process, known as “deskilling,” becomes increasingly obvious as our dependence on technology grows. As a result, people’s abilities to carry out complex tasks diminish. Their skills in controlling those tasks also dwindle. They struggle to correct errors and generate original solutions.
Let’s take football as an example. VAR technology makes referees second-guess their own decisions, but doesn’t it also dull their sharp instincts? Or consider pilots in high-tech airplanes — are their skills atrophying? And to go even simpler, what about translating a foreign article? AI now completes the translation in seconds. Earlier, this task required your own effort. This speed leads to a decline in your translation skills.
I personally feel this. While my life has become remarkably easier, I notice that automating certain tasks with technology can actually suppress cognitive abilities.
For myself, I’ve found a solution. Writing stories and narratives. Focusing my mind on the creation of stories, on the words that come together, and on the story itself. I push my language and writing abilities to their limits…
